  • Working Lunch Session with Governor Schwarzenegger and R20 – Regions for Climate Action

    Geneva, Switzerland – June 23, 2011

    Reducing CO2 emissions, transitioning to alternative energy sources, increasing energy efficiency. These are only the top items on our to-do list to improve our planet’s health. But what does it really take to make a difference? What’s really needed to scale the efforts and innovative solutions of a critical number of enlightened entrepreneurs, firms, organizations, cities and regions? At R20 – Regions for Climate Action, they believe it is a question of catalyzing partnerships and leveraging technology. R20 is a recently established non-profit organization registered under Swiss law. Its Founder and Chairman is former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: the organization reflects his vision, building on some of the innovative concepts he implemented while administering the largest state economy in the US. Dr. Maximilian Martin participated to the event, together with Terry Tamminen, former Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Impact Economy at the Ashoka Changemakers’ Week 2011

    Impact Economy, a content partner to the 30th anniversary event of Ashoka, held at HEC with over 1,000 social entrepreneurs and changemakers in attendance, designed and moderated a special session on the Impact Pledge. Entitled “Impact Pledge: Moving the Needle in Private Philanthropy”, the session analyzed what needs to happen to enable the social sector to deliver on our generation’s challenges and how a collective Impact Pledge can play a catalytic role. The session was moderated by Dr. Maximilian Martin, Founder and Global Managing Director of Impact Economy, with speakers Tom Biesinger, CEO of Genesis Ventures, Francis J. Brochon, Founder of Foundation for Technical Education, and Troy Stremler, Founder & CEO of Newdea, Inc.

  • Discussing Impact Investing at the Geneva Forum for Sustainable Investment 2011

    Geneva, Switzerland – June 16, 2011

    Dr. Maximilian Martin was invited to moderate a panel discussion on impact investments at the Geneva Forum for Sustainable Investment 2011. The event was held at the Hôtel Le Richemond and brought together a selected audience of firms operating in the Swiss financial sector. Organized by European Investor Relations, the Forum saw Sarasin as lead sponsor, Conser as co-organizer and Sustainable Finance Geneva as partner. Dr. Maximilian Martin, Founder & Managing Director of Impact Economy, moderated the afternoon session, titled “Initiation to Impact Finance”. The speakers were: Christian Schattenmann, Director Finance of BlueOrchard Investments, Regula Ritter, Head of Research of responsAbility Social Investments AG, and Guillaume Taylor, Managing Director of Quadia SA.

  • Opening Keynote at Americans for Community Development Inaugural Conference

    Chicago, USA – June 6-7, 2011

    The Founder and Global Managing Director of Impact Economy Dr. Maximilian Martin gave the keynote on the opening plenary panel of the Americans for Community Development Inaugural Conference 2011: "The L3C A to Z". Entitled “New Philanthropic Funding Structures”, the session was moderated by Bob Lang, Founder of Americans for Community Development and Creator of the L3C, with special commentator Steve Gunderson, President & CEO, Council on Foundations, USA. Dr. Maximilian Martin, presented his research findings on the four megatrends - or “revolutions” - that are changing the philanthropic space in our times of cross-sector convergence. Backing the findings, Steve Gunderson pointed out the significant acceleration of the rate of change in philanthropy since he began his tenure as President & CEO of the Council on Foundations.

  • Impact Economy at the "House of Philanthropy Solutions"

    Zurich, Switzerland – May 27, 2011

    Impact Economy’s Dr. Maximilian Martin delivered the conference keynote and served as the panel moderator of the session “Social entrepreneurs interactive” at the conference “The Power of Social Finance”. Developed and co-hosted by Ashoka Switzerland and LGT Venture Philanthropy, the event was held at the LGT VP House of Philanthropy Solutions in Zurich. In the interactive session, we discussed with a group of renowned social entrepreneurs which mix of social finance instruments - including grants, debt and equity – was best suited to enable them to scale their impact, as their ventures went through different development phases. It became clear that despite all the enthusiasm about impact investing and sophisticated financial instruments, none of them would have gotten where they are now without initial grant support.

  • Impact Economy Travels to Slovenia

    Impact Economy served as the content partner to the “Eastern European Corporate Responsibility and Philanthropy Conference”. Dr. Maximilian Martin co-designed the program and contributed directly to several sessions as a speaker and moderator. The event was held at the IEDC Bled School of Management in Bled, Slovenia, on May 16-17, 2011.

  • Keynote Session at Step 2011 in Frankfurt

    Dr. Maximilian Martin delivered a keynote session at the conference of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Deutschland e.V., entitled “Golden Times: Current Trends in Wealth Structuring and Succession Planning”. The conference brought together key representatives of the wealth management industry in Frankfurt, Germany. Throughout the day, the sessions were designed to help participant’s access innovative insights relevant to practitioners.

  • Humagora 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland

    Impact Economy’s Dr. Maximilian Martin served on an expert panel at the conference “Philias 2011: Humagora”. Organized by the Philias Foundation, with L’Oreal as the primary partner next to several other leading players in the Geneva cluster, including HSBC, the Medtronic Foundation, Fédération des Entreprises Romandes, Merck, Merck Serono, Rentes Genevoises and media partner Bilan, the conference brought together key representatives of Swiss companies committed to corporate responsibility. Dr. Martin served on the panel “The New Philanthropy: Access to a New Type of Partnerships”.   • Impact Economy at Convergences 2015 in Paris

    Paris, France – May 3-5, 2011

    Expert panel for Impact Economy at the conference “Convergences 2015: Investing and Working Towards the Millennium Development Goals”. Organized by ACTED, an independent French-based NGO, for the fourth consecutive year, the Convergences 2015 Forum, dedicated to aid and development, microfinance, social business, social entrepreneurship and inclusive business, brought together a wide range of actors. Dr. Maximilian Martin spoke at the workshop “Innovative financial solutions to scale up social businesses”. Based on the recognition that access to funding remains a major constraint for social businesses that are ready to scale up, the workshop reviewed and reflected collectively on the tools that can be implemented to facilitate the development of social investment financing.
